CUBA: BEATINGS, ARBITRARY DETENTIONS AND OTHER HUMAN RIGHTS VIOLATIONS BY THE COMMUNIST REGIME MARK START OF 2021

Miami, Florida- January 12th, 2021 Cuban Democratic Directorate “Directorio”- Human rights violations by the Communist Regime in Cuba continue to run rampant as the New Year starts.

Just in the past few days the following acts of repression have taken place:

HAVANA
January 10, 2021
Political prisoner Adrian Curuneaux Stevens, delegate of the Opposition Movement for a New Republic and the Democracy Movement, was unmercifully beaten by several guards in the Valle Grande Prison. One of the guards going by the name of “Alexai” focused on blows to his face. Curuneaux has been imprisoned without a trial for the bogus charge of “contempt” since May 23, 2020. After being held over eight months, without a trial, Adrian went on a hunger strike in protest on January 7, 2021. In response, he was stripped of his clothes and left totally naked. On January 10, 2021, he was removed from his cell under the pretext of taking him to the infirmary where the beating took place.

Agustin Figueroa Galindo, President of the Colonel Vicente Méndez Movement and member of the United Democratic Commitment Coalition was kidnapped from the door of his home by State Security Police and arbitrarily detained for two days. Agustin was subjected to interrogations and threats during his unlawful detainment. According to the complaint received by Directorio from Agustin Figueroa Galindo: “the arrest, as always, was to make the usual threats like the following: ‘There would be no public manifestations allowed’. ‘You would be punished for working with Orlando Gutierrez (National Secretary of the Cuban Democratic Directorate).’ ‘We could put you behind bars for carrying out counter revolutionary activities.’ ‘We would not allow one more poster nor photos of Cuban martyrs.’ ‘We would not allow any kind of unity between opposition movements.’”

Agustin Figueroa Galindo, President of the Colonel Vicente Méndez Movement and member of the United Democratic Commitment Coalition was kidnapped from the door of his home.

January 8, 2021
Human Rights Activists Caridad Milagros Sanchez Ramirez and Juan Lamas Martinez of the Opposition Movement for a New Republic, were arbitrarily detained by the political police in San Miguel del Padron Avenue. They were taken to Police Unit #11 of that municipality where they were accused of putting up anti-regime posters in public places. They were both threatened with imprisonment if they continue with their activism.

January 6, 2021
Jose Diaz Silva, President of Movement for a New Republic (MONR) and delegate of the Democracy Movement, was arbitrarily arrested and beaten once again. According to Diaz Silva’s statement on Facebook: “I was leaving my house, which is also the MONR headquarters in the City of Rancho Boyeros, when I was forcibly and publicly handcuffed, beaten and arrested in the middle of 184th Avenue by two policemen and two women from the political police (MININT). I was taken to the police station in Santiago de Las Vegas, there were more than twenty policemen present. I was later dragged thirty meters to a jail cell where they threw me on the floor. They removed everything I had and left my pants down to my ankles and they then resumed beating me. Afterwards, I was released.”
 
January 5, 2021
For 92 consecutive hours the headquarters of Ladies in White which is also the home of its leader, Berta Soler and her husband, former political prisoner Angel Moya, was besieged. The ominous police presence began on Tuesday, January 5th,  and lasted until Sunday January 10th. Berta Soler Fernandez denounced the events on her Facebook page:

MAYABEQUE PROVINCE
January 11, 2021
Human Rights activists, Maria Cristina Garrido Rodriguez and her husband Michael Valladares, were arbitrarily arrested by the political police for attempting to do a live transmission on Facebook.

January 9. 2021
Repressive forces, including State Security and National Revolutionary Police (PNR), besieged activist Mayelin Pena Builein’s home located in the neighborhood of Ojo de Agua, Mayabeque Province.

ARTEMISA PROVINCE
January 10, 2021
The farm of the provincial delegate of Artemisa in San Antonio de los Baños, Daniel Alfaro Fria, of the Opposition Movement for a New Republic (MONR) was besieged and occupied by the repressive forces of the State Security.

January 8, 2021
Leticia Ramos Herreria, member of the Ladies in White movement, was arbitrarily detained on her way to a doctor’s appointment in Havana. Leticia stated the following: “Today, at around 12:30pm, I was detained on a public road on my way to Havana to see a doctor due to serious health problems. While en route, repressive political police forces prevented me from leaving the city. I was arbitrarily detained and transported in patrol car #041 to the State Security Headquarters in the city of Cardenas. I was interrogated as to my involvement with the United Democratic Commitment Coalition and later released.”

January 8, 2021
Felix Navarro leader of the “Pedro Luis Boitel” Party for Democracy, denounced over Radio Marti the arbitrary arrest and detainment of three party activists, stating “Francisco Rangel Manzano, Carlos Orlando Olivera Martinez and Lazaro Diaz Sanchez were arbitrarily arrested as they arrived at the town of Perico by political police officers. They were taken to the police station of the municipal territory where they remained arbitrarily detained from 10:00am to 11:15pm.”

VILLA CLARA PROVINCE
January 7, 2021
Guillermo Fariñas, recipient of the Andrei Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Conscience, and Coordinator of the United Anti-totalitarian Forum (FANTU) was arbitrarily arrested on January 7th and threatened with imprisonment by a State Security officer and a police officer for alleged subversive activity. He was taken to a police unit known as “UPICO” where he was interrogated.

HOLGUIN PROVINCE
January 6, 2021
Human Rights activists and siblings Ana Iris Miranda Leyva, Ada Iris Miranda Leyva and Fidel Manuel Batista Leyva who are all former Prisoners of Conscience, denounced the latest violent arbitrary detention they all suffered from January 6 at 12:27pm to January 7 at 6:00pm during which time they endured brutal beatings. An ominous siege and surveillance was maintained on their mother, human rights activist Maydolis Leyva Portelles and on Ada Iris’ children: Tahimi (14 years old) and Alain (13 years old). All these repressive operations involved: State Security officers, Gibara Municipal People’s Power officials, police and local rapid response groups.
